Over the past several months, we have been studying stewardship as our way of life. It is not a one-time destination. Rather, it is a pathway toward redemption and eternal salvation. Stewardship calls for our constant vigilance and readiness, “for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come” (Matthew 24:44, Luke 12:40).

Stewardship is a shared responsibility, a collaborative process, a journey together. We serve lovingly with each other, using our varied and God-given resources, guided by the Holy Spirit, to benefit creation and advance the Kingdom of God.

Stewardship is a continuous conversion. Our formation is ongoing. Every day presents an opportunity for personal study and growth; every day presents an opportunity to share our lessons and teach the Truth to others.

“Let us walk in the light of the Lord!” (Isaiah 2:5). Through prayer and sacraments, we nurture our relationship with God, dispose our souls to receive His abundant graces, and grow in holiness. As our faith and trust in God increases, the fire of the Holy Spirit burns ever more brightly within us. We can shine that light to illuminate the way for others through our example and witness.

As we enter into the season of Advent, embrace our journey together with confidence and hope in the coming of the Lord. Saint Alphonsus Liguori teaches us that “He who trusts in himself is lost. He who trusts in God can do all things.” With God at our side, we are empowered to work together to care for creation, honor our humanity, display our faith, and make disciples. Reflect on the words of Pope Leo XIV when he says: “let us walk together, with joy in our hearts and a song on our lips. God is greater than our mediocrity: let us be drawn to Him! This solemnity, instituted 100 years ago by Pope Pius XI, encourages us to publicly celebrate our faith and remind others that while governments come and go, Christ reigns as King of all creation forever. In his encyclical Quas Primas, Pope Pius XI affirms that Jesus Christ “is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind.” In that light, the universal kingship of Christ harkens back to his command: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19).

The necessity for this solemnity remains strong a full century later. Pope Leo XIV observes that “Our world, wounded by war, violence and injustice needs to hear the Gospel message of God’s love and to experience the reconciling power of Christ’s grace.” Our Christian faith provides us with a pathway to salvation. When we receive the gift of faith, it is our responsibility to spread that good news as collaborators and cooperators in the continuance of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ. “As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10).

All baptized people, therefore, are universally qualified and individually called to assist in the priestly work of proclaiming the Kingdom of God. “But you are ‘a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises’ of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light” (1 Peter 2:9). By virtue of the gifts bestowed to us by God, every Christian is “a witness and a living instrument of the mission of the Church itself” (Lumen Gentium, no. 33). Pope Francis elaborates: “All the baptized, whatever their position in the Church or their level of instruction in the faith, are agents of evangelization, and it would be insufficient to envisage a plan of evangelization to be carried out by professionals while the rest of the faithful would simply be passive recipients.”

Recall that during his earthly ministry, Jesus and his followers constitute a living community and become the temple not made with hands (Acts 7:48). As such, the people represent the early Church. Just as Jesus proclaims the Kingdom of God, the Church proclaims our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In our post-resurrection community, the proclaimer becomes the proclaimed. This institution is necessary for continued evangelization and communion with God. The risen Jesus is made present by the Church, with the community guided and perfected by the Holy Spirit.

In Christifideles Laici, Pope Saint John Paul II urgently pleads for the action of the lay faithful to combat changing affairs in the Church as well as in social, economic, political, and cultural life. He makes the significant point that the parish is principally not a structure, territory, or a building but rather, “the family of God, a fellowship afire with a unifying spirit.” With the grace of God, we are enabled to spark the flame that illuminates the world with the salvific charity and mercy of the Lord.

“A renewed impulse is required to proclaim and transmit the faith. This means placing Jesus Christ at the center,” notes Pope Leo XIV. He continues to say that we must help “people to live a personal relationship with Him, so they may discover the joy of the Gospel.” Making disciples begins with the simple introduction to Jesus Christ in order to foster a true encounter with him. Pope Francis explains that evangelization “does not begin by seeking to convince others, but by bearing witness each day to the love that has watched over us and lifted us back up.”

As we celebrate that Jesus Christ is King of the Universe, your assignment this week is to follow his instructions and go make disciples. Use your gifts to reveal the face of God to others and to advance His Kingdom. And reflect upon these words of Pope Leo XIV: “No one can stop you from proclaiming the Gospel–and it is the Gospel that we are sent to bring, because this is what everyone–ourselves first of all–needs in order to live well and to be happy.”

Week Beginning November 16, 2025

Displaying Faith

We display our faith to others in many ways. By demonstrating hospitality and kindness, we reveal the merciful face of Jesus Christ. Through prayer and sacraments, we grow closer to God and share in His abundant graces. Formation allows us to learn and teach. Service spreads care and love. These Four Pillars of Stewardship provide a foundation for our ongoing commitment to the redemptive and salvific work of Our Lord and Savior.

The path of Jesus Christ is our perfect paradigm to guide us through our journey as stewards of the faith. We can reflect the light of God to shine throughout the earth simply by mirroring his example. Specifically, Jesus forms his ministry of loving service and instructs his disciples that their love for one another is indicative of this ministry (John 13:34-35). In the Gospel, Saint John discloses how God’s love permeates Christian life:

“Beloved, let us love one another, because love is of God; everyone who loves is begotten by God and knows God. Whoever is without love does not know God, for God is love. In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as expiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also must love one another. No one has ever seen God. Yet, if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is brought to perfection in us” (1 John 4:7-12).

This passage is particularly enlightening, because it explains the dynamic correlation between our loving relationship with God and our imperative to love one another. Pope Benedict XVI describes “a double dimension: the vertical (communion with God) and the horizontal (communion among men)” with respect to the concept of communion as a key to ecclesiology (Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, 1992).

Applying that same “double dimension” to our call to love, our vertical axis is formed when God sends His loving mercy and divine grace down to us. We reciprocate by offering up all that we have including our love for Him. Horizontally, we engage in benevolent communion with others as we freely exchange love, perform good deeds, grant forgiveness, and live in harmony with the world. Being a Christian and living as God intends involves strengthening our relationships along both axes through our charitable actions.

To form a stable cross–our symbol of Christianity–the stipe and patibulum must both remain strong and balanced. On the crucifix, Jesus hangs at the intersection of the two beams. In such a way, he connects humanity to divinity. As the Word Incarnate, Jesus brings God to us; through his Passion, death, and resurrection, Jesus brings us to God. On that dark night of faith hanging on the cross, Jesus exhibits his unwavering love for God and man and sets the ultimate example of how to love.

Flowing directly from that love is a devotion to service: “the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45, Matthew 20:28). His ultimate service in the face of death, which exemplifies his complete and selfless love, is to sacrifice his own life for our salvation. Here, service also crosses vertically to God and horizontally to each other.

The many charisms that are prominent in the teaching of Jesus proceed out of this underlying foundation of love and service. Together, they comprise the essential elements that define the nature of the Church and outwardly mark us as disciples of Christ. The prolific Christian author Tertullian cites the observation by the pagans regarding the first Christians: “See how they love one another.”

In our second reading today, Saints Paul, Timothy, and Silas remind the early Church of the importance of serving as role models so that others can recognize and imitate the behavior (2 Thessalonians 3:7-12). Displaying our faith goes beyond wearing a cross and offering to pray for people. It requires putting our beliefs into practice by loving and serving others as our way of life. Pope Francis explains: “We cannot be Christians part-time. If Christ is at the center of our lives, He is present in all that we do.”

This week, consider how you represent your faith to the world. Would an outsider recognize you as a Christian through your words and actions? Do you love and serve promptly, easily, and joyfully? Saint Augustine says, “The Christian should be an alleluia from head to foot.” What steps can you take to make that your stable disposition?

Week Beginning November 9, 2025

Honoring Our Humanity

“Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.”

~ Genesis 2:7

Created in the image of God, every human life is sacred, contains inherent dignity, and has infinite worth. The Catechism of the Catholic Church declares that “Being in the image of God the human individual possesses the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone. He is capable of self-knowledge, of self-possession and of freely giving himself and entering into communion with other persons” (CCC 357). The Catechism continues: “The human body shares in the dignity of ‘the image of God’: it is a human body precisely because it is animated by a spiritual soul, and it is the whole human person that is intended to become, in the body of Christ, a temple of the Spirit” (CCC 364).

In our second reading this Sunday, Saint Paul reminds us of the moral implications regarding the reverence we display toward one another and ourselves. “Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God, which you are, is holy” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17).

Created in His divine image and likeness, we share a unique bond with God to cooperate in caring for each other. Blessed with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are called to protect, preserve, and promote all life from conception to natural death. Pope Francis attests that “the dignity of others is to be respected in all circumstances, not because that dignity is something we have invented or imagined, but because human beings possess an intrinsic worth superior to that of material objects and contingent situations. This requires that they be treated differently.”

Our ontological human dignity is indelible. The 2024 Declaration of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith Dignitas Infinita elaborates: “Every human person possesses an infinite dignity, inalienably grounded in his or her very being, which prevails in and beyond every circumstance, state, or situation the person may ever encounter. This principle, which is fully recognizable even by reason alone, underlies the primacy of the human person and the protection of human rights.”

The Catechism asserts that “Human life is sacred because from its beginning it involves the creative action of God and it remains forever in a special relationship with the Creator, who is its sole end. God alone is the Lord of life from its beginning until its end: no one can under any circumstance claim for himself the right directly to destroy an innocent human being (Donum Vitae)” (CCC 2258). Acta Apostolicae Sedis notes that “By taking the interrelationship of these two dimensions, the human and the divine, as the starting point, one understands better why it is that man has unassailable value: he possesses an eternal vocation and is called to share in the trinitarian love of the living God” (N 8: AAS 100 (2008), 863).

The Second Vatican Council observes:

“The Word of God, through whom all things were made, became man and dwelt among us, a perfect man, he entered world history, taking that history into himself and recapitulating it. He reveals to us that ‘God is love’ (1 John 4:8) and at the same time teaches that the fundamental law of human perfection, and consequently of the transformation of the world, is the new commandment of love. He assures those who trust in the charity of God that the way of love is open to all and that the effort to establish a universal communion will not be in vain” (Gaudium et Spes, no. 38).

God loves us so much that he sends His only Son to provide us with a path toward redemption and salvation. Importantly, Jesus gives his life for the salvation of mankind, not for the salvation of any other creatures. As the Word made flesh, he becomes a living, breathing role model for humanity. He instructs us to communicate with God through prayer. He shows us how to properly order our lives away from worldly goods and power with an emphasis toward God. He proves to us through his miracles that with faith in God, anything is possible. He exhibits how to withstand hardships and discloses that God endures them with us. He demonstrates how we should treat one another with love and respect, how we should live our lives simply and modestly, and how we should always serve with compassion. Jesus illuminates our dignity through his Incarnation, preaching, and ministry. Dignitas Infinita summarizes:

“By uniting himself with every human being through his Incarnation, Jesus Christ confirmed that each person possesses an immeasurable dignity simply by belonging to the human community; moreover, he affirmed that this dignity can never be lost. By proclaiming that the Kingdom of God belongs to the poor, the humble, the despised, and those who suffer in body and spirit; by healing all sorts of illnesses and infirmities, even the most dramatic ones, such as leprosy; by affirming that whatever is done to these individuals is also done to him because he is present in them: in all these ways, Jesus brought the great novelty of recognizing the dignity of every person, especially those who were considered ‘unworthy.’”

Pope Saint John Paul II describes how Christ does all of this through love:

“Jesus did not only treat and heal the sick, but he was also a tireless promoter of health through his saving presence, teaching and action. His love for man was expressed in relationships full of humanity, which led him to understand, to show compassion and bring comfort, harmoniously combining tenderness and strength. He was moved by the beauty of nature, he was sensitive to human suffering, he fought evil and injustice. He faced the negative aspects of this experience courageously and, fully aware of the implications, communicated the certainty of a new world. In him, the human condition showed its face redeemed and the deepest human aspirations found fulfillment.”

Jesus Christ begins his earthly ministry by shepherding a flock of “lost sheep” that includes tax collectors and prostitutes. “Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. I did not come to call the righteous but sinners” (Mark 2:17). As our Divine Physician, he comes to heal the souls of those who need his mercy, not those who are spiritually healthy. He illustrates that even scribes, Pharisees, and nobles need forgiveness. As we journey together, let us try to emulate the hospitality Our Lord shows to the least of our brothers and to us. Let us strive to serve as he does without judgement or discrimination. Let us be quick to confess and to forgive. God’s mercy is intended to make saints out of sinners–all we have to do is ask.

This week, reflect upon and embrace the qualities that make us human, such as our ability to love, our compassion, and our creativity. Recognize our strengths and our vulnerabilities as gifts that enable each of us to give and also require each of us to take. Through our relationships, we are able to develop our talents by serving one another. To properly steward creation, then, is to view nature as a revelation of God’s great glory. The Book of Genesis teaches us that when God creates the human form, He bestows upon us His image and likeness. Incorporated in our resemblance to God is our call to cooperate with our Creator to care for His creation. We plant, preserve, protect, and pass on the beauty and balance of the natural environment as our spiritual and social responsibility.

To be a Christian steward is to begin with a reverence for the world as a gift created by God, sustained by His wisdom, and entrusted to humanity to nurture and cultivate. We assume stewardship of our planet, knowing that God intends for us to maintain its natural beauty and life-sustaining resources for future generations. As Christian stewards, we live with restraint, gratitude, and humility as we accept that we are custodians–not owners–of this vast cosmos.

In their 2001 Statement on Global Climate Change, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops states:

“As people of faith, we are convinced that ‘the earth is the Lord’s and all it holds’ (Psalm 24:1). Our Creator has given us the gift of creation: the air we breathe, the water that sustains life, the fruits of the land that nourish us, and the entire web of life without which human life cannot flourish. All of this God created and found ‘very good.’”

The Second Vatican Council reminds us that as we build up our world, we also contribute to the Kingdom of God. When we view our work through the lens of collaborating with this divine objective, all of our humble efforts are glorified for the benefit of our common good. As such, we distribute our bounty ethically and justly, we safeguard the dignity of all life, and we discern prudently when to conserve and when to construct. Pope Leo XIV observes that “Care for creation is truly a vocation for every human being. We are creatures among creatures, entrusted with the responsibility to care for all that the Creator has made.”

To care for creation is to respond to this sacred trust, avoiding exploitation in our efforts to “till and keep” the land (Genesis 2:15). Pope Saint John Paul II explains how our privilege comes with limitations and demands reasonable accountability.

“The dominion granted to man by the Creator is not an absolute power, nor can one speak of a freedom to ‘use and misuse,’ or to dispose of things as one pleases. The limitation imposed from the beginning by the Creator himself and expressed symbolically by the prohibition not to ‘eat of the fruit of the tree’ (cf. Genesis 2:16-17) shows clearly enough that, when it comes to the natural world, we are subject not only to biological laws but also to moral ones, which cannot be violated with impunity. A true concept of development cannot ignore the use of the elements of nature, the renewability of resources and the consequences of haphazard industrialization–three considerations which alert our consciences to the moral dimension of development” (Sollicitudo rei Socialis, no. 34).

Therefore, good stewards realize that misuse of the earth’s resources has the potential for injustice, especially when creation is treated merely as a commodity to be dominated. From this foundation, prudent stewardship of the environment becomes an act of justice, not just toward the earth, but also toward our neighbors and future generations. It is bound up in the Church’s vision for a just and holy society that perpetuates the common good. Pope Francis elaborates:

“The natural environment is a collective good, the patrimony of all humanity and the responsibility of everyone. If we make something our own, it is only to administer it for the good of all. If we do not, we burden our consciences with the weight of having denied the existence of others” (Laudato Si’, no. 95).

To hold the world with care is to mirror the heart of God and to live out the Christian life in the deepest sense. In caring for creation, we open ourselves to the mystery of His presence in the world, recognizing that the same Christ who will one day renew all things invites us now to participate in this divine and human collaboration. This week, consider what you can guard instead of what you can get and what you can spare instead of what you can use. Reflect on these words from Saint Francis of Assisi: “Praised be you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains us and directs us bringing forth all kinds of fruits and colored flowers and herbs.” How can you praise the Lord by treating His creation as a cherished part of your family?

    <section class="elementor-section elementor-top-section
