The promise of a new year inspires us to make resolutions that promote self improvement. We hope to make a fresh start by breaking harmful patterns and adopting healthy habits. We\u2019ll begin this year by delving into the tendencies and temptations that block us from growing closer to the Lord and becoming our best selves.<\/h3>

Critically evaluating our propensities toward the seven deadly sins can alert us to our weaknesses and strengthen our resolve. Although the deadly sins can induce spiritual death, they are technically fundamental vices that shape bad habits and give rise to our actual sins. As we attempt to move away from vice toward a life of virtue, it is important to recognize that our human potentiality to sin affects everyone as a result of Original Sin. Actual sin, however, occurs when we choose to turn away from God in a defective operation of our free will.<\/h3>

\u201cThere are six things the\u00a0Lord\u00a0hates, yes, seven are an abomination to him; Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that are quick to run to evil, the false witness who utters lies, and the one who sows discord among kindred” (Proverbs 6:16-19).\u00a0<\/h3>

Originally, the seven vices detailed in Proverbs<\/em> included pride, lying, murder, intrigue, readiness for evil, bearing false witness, and stirring up discord. Medieval authors and artists popularized the concept of these seven vices as well as their corresponding virtues. The fourth-century Christian monk Evagrius Ponticus summarized his \u201ceight evil thoughts\u201d as gluttony, lust, avarice, anger, sloth, sadness, vainglory, and pride. His student, Saint John Cassian, shared that concept with the Western Church. In the sixth century, Pope Saint Gregory I removed \u201csloth,\u201d added \u201cenvy,\u201d and named \u201cpride\u201d the ruler over the other seven vices, which became known as the seven deadly sins. Saint Thomas Aquinas revisited the list in the thirteenth century. He eliminated \u201csadness\u201d and brought back \u201csloth.\u201d The Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em> supports his version of the list with \u201cvainglory\u201d being merged into \u201cpride.\u201d\u00a0<\/h3>

\u201cVices can be classified according to the virtues they oppose, or also be linked to the\u00a0capital sins\u00a0which Christian experience has distinguished, following Saint John Cassian and Saint Gregory the Great. They are called “capital” because they engender other sins, other vices. They are pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth or acedia\u201d (CCC 1866\u00a0).<\/h3>

We refer to these seven sources of sin as \u201ccardinal,\u201d \u201ccapital,\u201d or \u201cdeadly\u201d sins. The word cardinal originates from the Latin word cardo<\/em> meaning hinge. Noting that a hinge is the crucial point on which something turns, the term cardinal sin conveys the central and pivotal nature of vice. The word capital is derived from the Latin caput<\/em> meaning head. Just as our heads lead our bodies, the capital sins lead us to further immorality. About a century after Saint Thomas Aquinas published his work, capital began to mean deadly in the English language. A capital crime, for example, could be punishable by death or cause death. A deadly sin, therefore, would be considered a grave or destructive act. Note that these are often confused with mortal sins, which are also grave acts but are committed with full knowledge of the gravity and full consent of the sinner\u2019s will. Mortal sins destroy our eternal souls and place our salvation in jeopardy.<\/h3>

Vice also corrupts our union of love with God and our relationships with other people by inclining us toward sin. When we allow our actions to be controlled by vice, we become a danger to ourselves and to others to the extent that these tendencies pervade our lives. Succumbing to vice\u00ad\u00ad\u2013especially in a repetitive manner\u2013facilitates our ability to commit sin, which is an abuse of reason. When we become entrenched in sin, our evil behavior becomes normalized to us. In such a way, sin exhorts itself with disordered reason, compounds itself with progressively worsening conduct, and rationalizes despicable practices as praiseworthy pursuits. Capital vices are like spiritual red flags that warn us of the potential peril we face.<\/h3>

The concept of the seven deadly sins continues to be popularized in society through movies, television programs, art, music, and literature. Sherwood Schwartz, creator of Gilligan\u2019s Island<\/em>, admits that each of the show\u2019s characters represents one of the seven deadly sins. Another well-known example of a program that personifies the sins through the characters is SpongeBob SquarePants<\/em>. As we study this topic, you will readily spot these behaviors in yourself, the people who surround you, mainstream culture, and media.<\/h3>

Over the next several weeks in our \u201cWeekly Challenge\u201d section, we will examine each of the seven deadly sins described below.<\/h3>

Pride<\/em>, often associated with vainglory, is an excessive love of one\u2019s self.<\/h3>

Envy<\/em> is sadness for or a desire to possess the goods of another.<\/h3>

Wrath<\/em> or unreasonable anger is categorized by uncontrolled feelings of hatred and rage.<\/h3>

Sloth<\/em>, also known as acedia, is described as physical, mental, and spiritual laziness.<\/h3>

Avarice<\/em> is greed demonstrated by a perverse attachment to material goods and wealth.<\/h3>

Gluttony<\/em> is exhibited through inordinate consumption, most commonly of food or drink.<\/h3>

Lust<\/em> is an intense desire for pleasure, typically in the form of sex, money, power, or fame.<\/h3>

Our weekly probe into these seven deadly sins will include their \u201cdaughters,\u201d\u00ad or the subsets of sin to which they give birth. Their daughters reveal the habits that that we might exhibit as a form of the capital vice. Because we are not immune to evil, it is important to recognize these behaviors and remedy them before they provoke us to sin. This month, please comment on how you have used spiritual red flags to avoid temptation or how sinful proclivities can spiral into trouble.
