\u201cWhen the Son of Man comes in his glory,
and all the angels with him,
he will sit upon his glorious throne,
and all the nations will be assembled before him.\u00a0
And he will separate them one from another,
as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
Then the king will say to those on his right,
\u2018Come, you who are blessed by my Father.
Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me,
ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.\u2019
Then the righteous will answer him and say,
\u2018Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,
or thirsty and give you drink?
When did we see you a stranger and welcome you,
or naked and clothe you?\u00a0
When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?\u2019
And the king will say to them in reply,
\u2018Amen, I say to you, whatever you did
for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.\u2019
Then he will say to those on his left,
\u2018Depart from me, you accursed,
into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels.
For I was hungry and you gave me no food,
I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,
a stranger and you gave me no welcome,
naked and you gave me no clothing,
ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.\u2019
Then they will answer and say,
\u2018Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty
or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison,
and not minister to your needs?\u2019
He will answer them, \u2018Amen, I say to you,
what you did not do for one of these least ones,
you did not do for me.\u2019
And these will go off to eternal punishment,
but the righteous to eternal life.\u201d<\/h3>

Saint Matthew details the scriptural justification for the corporal works of mercy\u2013the seven charitable deeds that address the physical needs of our neighbors. As we minister to the marginalized, we are strenuously urged to treat the lowliest pauper the same as the exalted King. \u00a0Saint John Chrysostom warns, \u201cIf you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find Him in the chalice.\u201d<\/h3>

Jesus asks us to not only see him in others, but also to be him in ourselves. Through the corporal works of mercy, our hearts become extensions of God\u2019s love in the world. We are called to be more like the one who taught us to love our neighbors as ourselves. Our actions provide the visible and tangible presence of God\u2019s compassion and mercy to those in need. Saint Teresa of Avila observes:<\/h3>

\u201cChrist has no body now but yours. No hands, no feet on earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world. Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good. Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world. Yours are the hands, yours are the feet, yours are the eyes, you are his body. Christ has no body now on earth but yours.\u201d<\/h3>

When we perform the corporal works of mercy, we are transformed into instruments of God\u2019s grace by bringing comfort, healing, hope, and love to those in need. \u201cWhat does love look like?\u201d asks Saint Augustine. \u201cIt has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like.\u201d<\/h3>

The English word \u201ccorporal\u201d is derived from the Latin word corpus<\/em> meaning \u201cbody.\u201d We perform the corporal works of mercy by using our bodies to tend to the bodily needs of others. Those corporal acts include:<\/h3>

  • Burying the dead<\/h3><\/li>

  • Feeding the hungry<\/h3><\/li>

  • Giving drink to the thirsty<\/h3><\/li>

  • Clothing the naked (alternatively listed as giving alms to the poor)<\/h3><\/li>

  • Visiting the sick<\/h3><\/li>

  • Visiting the imprisoned<\/h3><\/li>

  • Sheltering the homeless.<\/h3><\/li><\/ul>

    These concrete actions allow us to live out the Gospel<\/em> message and fulfill our baptismal promise to serve as disciples of Christ by sharing in his mission of love and service. When we recognize that every person is created in the image and likeness of God, we promote the inherent value of all life and uphold human dignity. We move beyond our own self-interests and enter into solidarity with those who are suffering by learning about and sharing in their struggles. This helps us to diversify our understanding of the human experience and to grow in virtue. As we encounter Christ in those we assist, we are drawn into an intimate relationship with him that enables us to see his work in the world.<\/h3>

    Performing the corporal acts of mercy helps us to build community, promote the common good, and achieve social justice. We work toward alleviating poverty and addressing structural injustices when we feed the hungry, offer drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, and shelter the homeless. We offer comfort and support to those who are often forgotten or neglected by society when we visit the sick, the imprisoned, and the dying.<\/h3>

    As we put our faith into action, we become witnesses to the transformative power of love and the presence of God in our midst. Pope Leo XIV explains: \u201cIt is not simply a matter of sharing the material goods we have, but putting our skills, time, love, presence and compassion at the service of others.\u201d\u00a0This can inspire them to experience their own encounters with Christ. The Pope reminds us that \u201cThe works of mercy are the most secure and profitable bank where we can entrust the treasure of our existence, because there, as the Gospel<\/em> teaches us, with \u2018two small copper coins\u2019 even the poor widow becomes the richest person in the world (cf.\u00a0Mark\u00a012:41-44).\u201d<\/h3>
